On behalf of Dan Lugo & the 10U Football Staff...
Greetings Dukes football families! We’re less than 2 weeks away from our first practice on August 2nd so we wanted to reach out to welcome you and pass along some key pieces of information. We presently have 19 players on our roster this year. While many of the players and families have been with us for multiple years (several since flag football!), we’re also so very fortunate to have many new families from Montgomery, Princeton and Manville. We welcome all of you and look forward to spending time together this season!
I realize this is a LOT of information but it is important that you review so that we’re off to the races once the season begins.
First and foremost, please make sure to visit the Hillsborough Dukes website www.hillsboroughdukes.com and download all necessary forms that need to be completed and handed in by the first day of practice. Specifically, we need the following:
2021 Physical Fitness and Medical History Form;
2021 Participant Contract and Parental Consent Form;
One (1) photocopy of birth certificate; and
Two (2) copies of the most recent report card (discussed below).
Your son will NOT be allowed to participate until medical forms are completed by a medical professional and submitted to the organization, so please be sure to have these when you come on August 2nd. You can find the necessary documentation on the Dukes website.
Pop Warner is the only national youth sports organization in America that requires participants to perform adequately in the classroom before permitting them to play. Not dissimilar to the NCAA or the National Federation of High Schools, Pop Warner has academic guidelines and criteria that need to be met in order for a child to participate. As indicated above, we will need two (2) copies of your son’s most recent report card to include with the respective registration forms in the team book.
Our football practices will run from 6:00 - 8:30 pm at Hillsborough Elementary School (435 US-206, Hillsborough Township, NJ 08844). The first week of practice will be held on Monday August 2nd thru Thursday, August 5th. For the remaining weeks in August, we will practice Monday through Thursday from 6:00 - 8:30 pm. Once school begins in September, we’ll be practicing two/three days a week for the balance of the season (generally Tuesday, Wednesday and one practice Thurs/Fri/Sat).
Our first few nights of practice will be held without pads with just t-shirts, shorts and cleats. Then during the second week we’ll gradually add helmets then helmets/shoulder pads as the boys acclimatize to conditions.The Dukes provide helmets, shoulder pads, rib pads, pants with integrated pads as well as practice/game jerseys. You will need to provide cleats, athletic cup and mouthpieces.
A practice schedule has been uploaded to our website for your review and you will also have an opportunity to keep track of the schedule using the “SI Play” app on your phones/devices or you can subscribe/sync the calendar to a platform of your choice. Please make sure that you arrive at least 15 minutes prior to practice.
Please do your best to have your child attend all practices. With a full roster it goes without saying that playing time will be commensurate with practice participation. If for any reason your child can not make it or will be late, please inform the coaching staff. Normally we practice rain or shine but either I or Jenn Glazewski (
) will contact you well enough in advance if a practice is canceled due to inclement weather. In the event inclement weather is imminent, please do not stray too far from the practice fields as our coaches are required to stay at the field until all players have been picked up.
Hydration is extremely IMPORTANT! Please make sure your child drinks plenty of water prior to practice and brings a labeled water bottle to practice each night. An 8-oz bottled water will not suffice – each of your boys should bring a large water jug capable of holding at least a half-gallon of water. During the first few summer weeks make sure to bring extra water while the players acclimatize themselves to training in the heat. We will have water & Gatorade available to purchase.
Equipment distribution will take place prior to the first day of practice. Details will be emailed to everyone shortly.
Dine with the Dukes
As in the past, we will offer concessions for sale during August practices. Below is the current menu, subject to change without notice.
Monday - BBQ (Hot Dogs, Burgers & Fries)
Tuesday - Ice Cream
Wednesday - Breakfast for Dinner & Fries
Thursday - Pizza Night
As many of you know, the Dukes are members of the largest Pop Warner Conferences in New Jersey, the Central Jersey Conference. There are several advantages associated with being a member of the Central Conference and one of the most significant is that we should have few, if any, out of conference games during the regular season. All of our games should be within an hour’s drive throughout central-NJ and, as in the past, home games will be played Sunday afternoons at the Hillsborough High School football stadium.
Central Jersey is still compiling their master schedule and we’ll post this to the website as soon as it becomes available, but we anticipate our first game will be on Sunday, August 29th. We are scheduled to play the following Sunday of Labor Day weekend (i.e., Sept. 5). I would ask all of you to kindly make arrangements to be available for a game that holiday weekend.
Mandatory Raffle Fundraiser
I would be remiss if I did not remind everyone that the Dukes are a registered non-profit organization and rely on fundraising activities to repair/replace equipment and uniforms and cover field usage fees, insurance, membership dues and referee expenses. Our board members and coaches are comprised entirely of volunteers who are not compensated for the literally hundreds of hours that they spend on the game and practice fields each year. Our annual calendar raffle is our most important fundraising effort and requires our families to sell a minimum of 20 raffle tickets at a total value of $200. Our Vice-President, Nicole Gaeta, or her designee will be distributing raffle tickets to each family and ensuring all raffle ticket money is submitted by the end of August.
An English poet once made the observation that many hands make light work and nowhere is this more applicable than a youth sports organization consisting of more than 200 football players and cheerleaders. There will be legion opportunities to satisfy the work bond fee that is a component of each registration, including field set up, concessions, game day announcing, chain gang, etc. I can assure you that the Dukes board will be validating work bond obligations for all families at the end of the season and charging the full work bond amount for any family that fails to fulfill their work bond obligations or fails to return equipment.
2021 Work Bond Opportunities are posted on our website. Please continue to check for available posts. Volunteer posts for August practice nights will be listed within the next few days.
Dan Lugo will serve as the head coach of the 10U football team and be joined by Joe O'Donnell, Harry Bugal & Rich Fedora. I will be the team manager and available for any questions pertaining to our team. Jenn Glazewski is also a great resource for any questions you may have.
Kickoff Cookout Event
On Saturday, August 14th, the Dukes are hosting a Kickoff Cookout and Movie night for all our families to celebrate the 2021 season. This event will begin at 6pm at our practice field. There will be free activities and concessions for sale. We hope to see everyone there!
OK, I think that about covers it for now. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions! See everyone soon!
